Solar Rebate Australia 2026: STCs, Eligibility and How the Discount Works

The phrase “solar rebate” is commonly used for the upfront discount created by Australia’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). For eligible small-scale solar systems, small-scale technology certificates (STCs) reduce the effective upfront price.

Is it a cash rebate?

Usually, the customer does not receive a separate government cash payment. In a typical solar sale, the right to create STCs is assigned and the retailer applies an upfront discount to the quoted price.

What changes the STC amount?

The certificate entitlement depends on factors including eligible system capacity, location/solar zone and the remaining deeming period under the scheme. Because certificate market values also vary, the dollar discount shown by retailers can differ.

Solar rebate vs battery rebate

Rooftop solar and batteries can both receive support through the SRES, but the calculation methods are different. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program introduced specific battery STC rules, including capacity tiers from May 2026.

Do not choose a solar system only by rebate amount

The rebate helps with upfront cost, but system quality, roof design, inverter selection, network export limits, shading, installer quality and expected solar production matter more over the life of the system.

Questions to ask on a solar quote

  • What panel and inverter models are included?
  • What system capacity is used for the STC calculation?
  • What STC value is assumed?
  • Is the displayed total before or after STCs?
  • What annual production estimate is being used?
  • What export limitation applies at the property?
